The dome at the Vitra Design Campus is a Charter-Sphere Dome designed by architect and engineer TC Howard of Synergetics, Inc. It is not geodesic. Buckminster Fuller patented the geometry for geodesic domes (all greater circle geometry) in 1954 based on the mathematics of Duncan Stuart. Bucky was an inventor, writer and lecturer. He was not an architect. In order to produce geodesic domes, Bucky invested in architectural firms. Synergetics, Inc was the first firm to design commercial geodesic domes. TC Howard was Synergetics, Inc primary designer from 1955 until 2006. The Charter-Sphere Dome was easier to design and build than geodesic domes.
