Lewerentz received the commission for St. Mark’s Church through a competition. He was invited, along with four other architects, to propose ideas for the new church. Lewerentz submitted multiple ideas and was ultimately chosen as the designer for the new church in 1956.

The route into the church from the courtyard is a progression from daylight to darkness. Upon entering the nave, the contrast is startling. A masterful use of light and contrast heightens the senses and conjures a sense of awe and reverence. In the darkness our eyes search for the light… We must wait for the light to be revealed to us.
