Husband and wife team make history as first couple to win Australia’s top architecture prize
Friday 19 March 2010
A Sydney-based husband and wife architectural team have made Australian history – becoming the first couple to win the nation’s top annual architecture prize.
At a ceremony in Brisbane last night (Thursday 18 March), Kerry and Lindsay Clare were announced winners of the Australian Institute of Architects 2010 Gold Medal for Architecture.
On top of their ‘first couple’ status, Kerry becomes only the second woman to receive the honour 50 years after it was created.
The couple are best known for a range of projects in Queensland, including the iconic and multiple award-winning Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, and tropical, low impact, sustainable houses across the State.
Well-known Australians applauding Kerry and Lindsay Clare’s win include the Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh, Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore, Queensland Government Architect Philip Follent, NSW Government Architect Peter Mould, Victorian Government Architect Geoffrey London, and former Victorian Government Architect John Denton.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said Kerry and Lindsay are “two of Australia’s most talented and influential architects”. She added: “The Gallery of Modern Art embodies the idea that architecture plays an integral role in the healthy functioning of a democracy.”
Previous Gold Medal winners include Glenn Murcutt and Jorn Utzon. The Gold Medal was presented at the inaugural Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards.
