At the heart of the MUMUTH building is a large theatre that can be used as a rehearsal and workshop area, a concert hall or musical theatre stage. It is designed for both classical musical theatre as well as modern music performances (including electronic music concerts) and features a public address system based on Ambisonics. This technique, realized in the MUMUTH with 29 individually controlled loudspeakers placed in the domed ceiling, is just one focus of research at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics at the KUG; the system operation software has been developed in-house by the Graz scientists.
The audio mixing console installed at Graz will be an OB van variant of the Lawo mc²66 console (without stand). It is equipped with 40 faders and provides 144 DSP channels, plus a router with 10 MADI ports and 8,000 x 8,000 crosspoints. The decision to choose Lawo was based on – among other reasons – the openness of the mc² system to external control (Remote Monopl). Further benefits: The star-like networkability with a long-distance remote core and I/O, as well as the large and flexible matrix.
Another complex Lawo reference project in the theatre and experimental field in Austria is the floating stage Bregenz, since 2004 successfully using two mc²66 plus three Nova73 HD cores in a wave field configuration.

Opening in March 2009, MUMUTH by UNStudio’s Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos wanted to create ” a building that would be as much about music as a building can be”.
The Haus für Musik und Musiktheater der Kunstuniversität (MUMUTH) is part of the city’s University for Music and Applied Art. The building facilities include a multiple-use main performance hall, teaching and rehearsal facilities, an open foyer that enables the public to learn more about the KUG and its activities, and a high-tech acoustic laboratory. The performance spaces are able to be adjusted acoustically to allow for the ideal sound for any type of performance.
The building is organised around a spiral element, which holds the central concrete staircase, but is also stretched and folded to form the interior spaces, welding together all three floors.
The structure is divided in two zones, one more and one less private, but the whole building maintains an overall strong public character; even the rehearsal studios are open, and the audience is welcome to come and watch the artists during rehearsal.
From the flexible spaces of the multiple-use main performance hall, to the use of cutting-edge materials like high-performance concrete, MUMUTH will be one of the most advanced and dynamic performance spaces in Europe.

How long did it take you to develop the Theatre’s proposal? Did the concept/design change much during that time?
Oh yes, it changed a lot! It was almost another design when we entered the competition. It took about 8 years for the project to reach construction stage. A lot of changes were made to the design while we were developing the concept and waiting for the necessary funds to realise it. It changed a lot during that time.
When designing, is there something in particular that you focus on? (Material, form, use etc)
I do all-round disciplined architecture. I graduated from the AA in the 1980s – a sublime period for architecture – and that plays a big role in how I work. External influences can always play a role but then you have to bring your own, new ideas. I pay attention to everything; for instance sustainability, public use, I try not to have too many signs in the building, and I pay attention to light. I like to work with all the classical elements of architecture, even though the result has often been described as cutting-edge! I often also focus on 1-2 main details or characteristics, and try to make them as strong as possible.
