I stumbled across this building hidden on a back street in central Tokyo squashed onto a tiny lot of Jimbocho or “Town of Used Book Stores”. The multi-faceted facade allowed for a 100m2 increase to the floor area, thus satisfyling both the restrictions in the local standard laws and regulations, and the desire to accommodate the large brief.
The inner space consists of a theater in the basement, Variety theater on the 2-3F, with a shared entrance hall and waiting space on the 1F. Standard regulations in Tokyo require “comfortable rooms to be located on the same floor as the theater”, but by locating them on the 1st floor, it has allowed for the maximization of both theaters. 4F and 5F accomodate the lesson rooms, and the 6F a management office.
The external facing consist of RC for acoustic control topped with a 4.5mm thick clad steel plates, which is the minimum thickness possible both construction and structure-wise, however this also acts as a shear wall. The clad steel plate has been fixed on the external facings with a gap in between the RC for drainage and structural tolerance.
